I keep on reading about the new trend: you don’t need much Maths if you want to become a painter, a doctor or a fisherman.
In my opinion (I passed from Cybernetics to writing fiction novels), it is totally wrong! Mathematics helps to form synapses and neural connections. To solve a Maths problem you don’t need only memory. It «forces» you to use logical thinking, intuition, to compare, to make simulations, to have perspicacity and distributive attention.
Many other sciences have a common point with Mathematics or they are significantly improved by mathematical knowledge. It is true that, nowadays, children study too many hours a day and, often, instead of doing sports, they have their afternoons full of German or IT lessons. And this may happen from early ages. But, however, offering them a childhood free of «mathematical» difficulties is an extremely long way. The new adults, however, love the extremes over the healthy middle ways of solving a problem. So, it doesn’t surprise me anymore when I meet well-prepared children, but exhausted and without friends, and children raised almost exclusively with Netflix, unable to concentrate for more than a few minutes on a subject that does not arouse their interest through strong colours.
Mathematics may not be striking, but it is necessary. In appropriate doses, and from early ages.

Yes I believe mathematics is important too, in Engineering, Physics, most of science, accounting, etc., as well as a tool to sharpen the mind. I love mathematics. However, some people have an issue with mathematics and I think that for them there are other venues to sharpen the mind.

Yes I agree. But I’m talking about elementary mathematics, the one that helps us in everyday problems. Thank you for stopping by and for the thought!
