Mile Markers

by Gina Maria Manchego

They held each other close as the earth swayed.
Whilst Norah Jones played:
‘Come away with me’
But where would they go?
A place where no one knows of those secrets they share.
Keep it quiet.
Don’t tell a soul that they don’t fit in the puzzle places they were cut out for.
They looked at each other and echoed a silent scream.

One without the other can’t feel a thing.

They want to start driving and never look back.
Dead end road signs spell out that…

Life is passing them by.

Years of mile markers tracking repeated sceneries.

Afraid to take a wrong turn.
Can they afford to ‘just keep going,’
like Bonnie and Clyde.

Did they make it out alive?

Will I?
Will you?
Will we?

Might as well put the pedal to the metal.

Close our eyes.

Then drive off this cliff called ‘love’ and enjoy the rest of the ride.
