Venice

by Marcello Comitini

I wish the blue of the sky was black
and the white clouds a twinkle of stars
the trees shrouded in a veil of fog
like women hidden by faith in man.
I wish the sea were in the streets
to wet the buildings and silent gondolas
charged with lights come out of the portals,
that men traveled slowly on the waters
lit with emeralds by lamplight
and in the great square
that they may smell the perfume
of loneliness.

I would like you to place your shadow next to me
like an angel coming out of submerged caves
and you offer me your face like an unveiled woman
in this dawn when the world is a languid Venice
and doves fly over a nonexistent sea.
