A Burning Letter to God by Terveen Gill

Dear God Almighty,

I would like to bring to your notice my dissatisfaction with the world that you have created.

I know that no one’s perfect and that you probably think so too.

Though your children (insensitive human bastards) harp on about their flawless intelligence and impeccable logical reasoning.

Please excuse my brashness, they wouldn’t know day from night if it weren’t for the sun and moon.

You had to place a burning ball of gases and a huge rock in space so that these idiots wouldn’t mix up the time of day.

I’m sure that anything lesser would’ve led to a global catastrophe.

You’ve given them a brain (useless), a heart (stone cold), a soul (merciless), but what have they done with them?

Besides destroying, deceiving, and blaming, they have made you a scapegoat for their roguish ideologies.

God is always guiding us…

In God’s name we declare…

With faith in God, we shall never err…

Are they kidding themselves?

When did you step down and give them access to your authority?

Have they forgotten that evil is the complete opposite of goodness?

I’m not sure whether you’ve even been aware of this utter nonsense.

Your duties do keep you tied up and busier than you would choose to be, and all those whining and needy prayers that require your attention.

How you keep yourself in one piece is amazing.

You might be wondering why I of all creatures am reaching out to you.

I know we haven’t been on good terms right from the beginning.

But there’s a problem that can’t be solved without your cooperation.

I’m running out of space and can’t afford to shelter more of these double-faced jackasses.

I would love to burn and torture them all, but every day their numbers soar by thousands.

Even I’m sickened to my devilish depths by the callousness of the human race.

Maybe you could devise a detention center and hold them there till I’m better prepared.

I’ve heard that you have no dearth of space.

A bit of give and take between me and you?

What do you think?

I’ll be waiting for your reply and a positive confirmation.

Never pleased. Always perturbed.

Forever no one’s. Not even yours.

The Devil.

  1. I loved this letter to God, Terveen. Had it not been for the signature, ‘The Devil’, I would have thought it’s the earth writing to god. I read it as a climate change activist post, a burning earth, complaining, trying to offload some of those annoying humans, in order to be able to breathe again. Well done, Terveen.

    1. I love your idea, Britta. How appropriate! Let’s just say that humans have pissed off many. Probably the only thing they’ve been good at. Offloading annoying humans – sounds like a great campaign. But seriously, what is going on here? We need to fix this and fast. Thanks so much for sharing your brilliance. Always appreciated. 🙂

  2. Like Britta, I initially thought this was a missive from Planet Earth regarding climate change, but it turned out even better (your sense of humor is exquisite!). Everything in this piece is true, and all we need to do is look around us to verify it. But despite the humor, it’s terrifying. Here in the States, we have our midterm elections today, which will be the most consequential elections in our nation’s history. The sheer evil of one of the parties is on full display and in high gear to obliterate our democracy. This piece’s timing couldn’t be better or more prescient. Your writing is brilliant as always, Terveen. Thanks for sharing this with us. And keep America in your thoughts today, will you? 🙂

    1. I sure will, Mike. It’s scary what people and their ambitions are coming to. I think the Devil doesn’t know as many evil tricks as they do. As humans we possess intellect, emotions, understanding and analytical skills. But do we put them to fruitful use? It seems there may have been a time when we did, but somehow greed, selfishness, and jealousy have snipped all good in the bud. Even those who wish to do good are pushed into the background. Who can one trust? I have no idea. Thank you for always voicing your feelings. 🙂

      1. Ah,? so it’s beer with you? Mine’s chardonnay. Skip’s is beer. Fosters. But you already know that………

Regardless the imibibement or lack of, to me, the purpose of writing is to bring what’s inside up and out…

And it has to pull at the emotions…..happy, sad, laughter. grief, whatever. If my write doesn’t pass this test, I’ve failed. Unless I’m missing something…….

  3. I love this Terveen. This letter makes me remember yelling at God as a little girl to just reach down and pick me up! I suppose in a way your detainment center could hold the bad folks, but like you said there are too many of them. The humane race is not doing so well. We will be holding our breath until the voting is over here. Your sense of humor is always weaved in and out of your powerful words. I loved what you said about the sun and the moon. Great piece and you really surprised me at the ending. Great read! Big hugs

    1. Joni, your comments always give me so much food for thought. A child asking God to take them, that breaks my heart. You are a very brave individual and that’s the best thing to be proud of. Yes, humans aren’t doing well. Looks like they’re out to destroy themselves. I suppose fiction has already depicted that reality many times. I feel humor softens the blow of sorrow. And when life is so twisted, the twists in fiction have tough competition. Haha! Take care and many thanks always.

      1. I agree with everything you said Terveen. I love the way you weave your humor in and out. Like your interviews where you have the funny remarks at the top. One day Scott and I laughed so hard. It really was such a good interview but the remarks written above about yourself were entertaining too. You really do have many gifts. Sending you hugs, peace and love ❤️

      1. Indeed. Asking for trouble. Hannah Arendt wrote that every human being has to reinvent the world. There’s no genetic transmission of memory. Which is why education is so important. But the downside of Arendt’ inside is that we don’t really learn. So we’re back at the gates of war…
