The last tune by Jorge Aldegunde

Shiny as new: he would only wear his shoes in that distinctive fashion. Many a time did he add that it was a token of honesty and integrity. At first, I thought he was cold, despotic and cruel. On a winter evening, after class, he lingered on and taught me to modulate my voice. I had to pitch those notes a thousand times. ‘Feel the music as if there was no tomorrow’, he exclaimed. Then I realised he was a unique, luminous being.

He did not attend the dress rehearsal and I felt somewhat betrayed. Soon I found out why, though: he was terminally ill with cancer and had kept it under cover.

As the choir interprets «Agur Jaunak» I stare at my sparkly moccasins, clench my teeth –my eyes now full of water–. And I just sing.

THE END
